Exterior Home Painting Tips

Painting the exterior of your home is an easy and cost-effective way to add value, protect your investment, and put your own individual statement into the neighborhood. To achieve a durable and long-lasting paint job, the first step is preparation, and the second step is using a quality coating.
Because different surfaces require different preparations and coatings, it is important to discuss your home’s materials — whether drywall, plaster, stucco, brick, or wood — with a trusted expert, whether it’s a professional painter or your local paint retailer.
Here’s a quick tip to get you started in the right direction…

Preparing to Paint the Exterior

Before you even think about opening a can of paint, remove as many items as you can (planters, mailboxes, shutters, house numbers, hoses, outdoor furniture, light fixtures, toys, etc.) from the area you’re going to paint. Be sure to protect any bushes, plants, or items that can’t be removed by covering them up with drop cloths. You can also put drop cloths under the areas you plan to paint.
Next, be sure to clean (for some surfaces, you may have the option to power wash for this step), repair (fill in holes or cracks with caulk, remove and replace damaged wood trim, etc), and prime all surfaces before painting.
Once the primer coat has dried, you’re ready to paint. Remember to mix your paint thoroughly before you start painting–and continue to stir it during use. Start with the body of the House.
When tackling your exterior house painting project, you can use either a brush, or a roller. Most projects require both at different times. Rolling can save you some time, but you will still need to use a brush for corners, trim, and doors.
